George Main Stakes Preview

This years George Main Stakes looks like a cracker, the field is jam packed with proven Group 1 performers (including a Melbourne Cup winner!). The 1600 meter Group 1 valued at $500k is race six on an exciting card at Randwick this Saturday, track is currently a GOOD 3 but rain is forecast for race day. After taking a good look at the field here are the runners to watch;

  • Pornichet -  Each way chance, has a tricky barrier (9) and needs to improve on last start where he ran 6th (3 lengths off the winner) in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick over 1600m. This will be his third run of the preparation so he will be hitting some kind of fitness and should be right in this, any rain should not be an issue.

  • Hooked - Place chance, Was good First Up, winning the Group 2 Tramway Stakes at Randwick when he shot to the lead and hung on by half a length. This is obviously a tougher race but he is drawn well and wont mind a bit of rain. Concerns are that he takes a 2kg weight rise into a higher grade of racing that is over an extra 200 meters on last start, may lack the fitness to lead all the way here so if there is some cover for him, he will be in it for a long way and may run into a place.

  • Kermadec - Winning chance, is well drawn, has a great record at 1600 meters (2/2/5) and looks in good form again this preparation after finishing off well for 2nd last start in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes. Will be better for that run and is drawn a lot closer here (barrier 5), looks the one to beat.

  • Sweynesse - Place chance, drawn well, needs to improve on last start, has obvious talent but may struggle with the big weight. Has to make an impression here if his Spring is to be a successful one, may surprise.

  • Royal Descent - Each way chance, would love some rain, looks in great form again and should be hitting some fitness, always goes close, has 8 placings from 8 starts at 1600 meters, could this be her first win?

  • Lucia Valentina - Winning chance, drawn well and will likely go back as per normal, smaller field will help and so will any rain, if tempo suits then she is a cracking chance and looks the best value runner. She finished off well last start after being held up for much of the straight, the extra 200 meters should suit if she has the fitness, two trials and the good run last start should ensure that she goes close.

  • Kirramosa - Place chance, unplaced in over a year but looked sharp last start after being held up for a long way, hopefully she has returned to a bit of form, could add some value to the exotics.
